一上午过去了，他一顶帽子也没有卖掉。他从上街走到下街一路叫卖，“帽子！卖帽子！五十分一顶！”可是那天上午没有一个人来买帽子。连红色的帽子都没人买。他觉得有点饿了，可是没有钱买午餐。“我还是到村庄那边走走吧。”他说。于是他走出镇子，走得很慢-很慢，让他的帽子稳稳立着不歪倒。
走了很久，他走到了一棵大树旁。他想：“这是个休息的好地方。”于是他非常慢非常慢地坐到树下，一丁点一丁点地把背靠到树干上，以免他头上的帽子歪倒。接着他伸手试了试帽子是不是还是叠得笔直--
他先检查了格纹帽子，接着依次检查了灰帽、棕帽、蓝帽和最顶上的红帽。
感觉到所有的帽子还都好好的，他就放心地睡了，一觉睡了很长时间。
等他醒来以后，他感觉已经神清气爽了。
但是，当他起身前伸手去检查头上的帽子是不是还在，他只摸到了他自己戴的那顶格纹帽子。
他找找左边，没有帽子。
找找右边，也没有帽子。
找找他背后，没有帽子，
又找找树的背后，也没有帽子。
于是他抬头往树上看，猜猜他看到什么了？
每根树枝上都蹲着一只猴子，每只猴子都戴着一顶帽子，有灰色，有棕色，有蓝色，有红色。
小贩看着猴子，猴子也看着小贩。他不知道该怎么办，于是开始向猴子劝说。“你们这些猴子，”他对猴子们摇着一根手指说，”把帽子还给我吧。”可是猴子们只是也对他摇着手指，口中喊着”吱吱吱~“
小贩生气了，他对猴子们挥舞着双手说，“你们这些猴子！把帽子还给我！”可是猴子们只是也对他挥舞着双手，口中喊着”吱吱吱~“
